Purpose of Vehicle Gaskets

Gaskets are used between many different vehicle components in order to fill gaps that might allow fluid or gases to escape. They also prevent dirt and debris from infiltrating engine or exhaust systems. Gaskets might be made using multiple layers of steel, copper or rubber. They are specially designed to withstand intense pressure and temperatures to form a tight seal. Gaskets are used to seal the camshaft, engine head, intake manifold, exhaust manifold and oil pan.

Over time, gaskets may tear or rupture. Visible signs of a problem include bubbling or foaming in the radiator. Smoke exiting the tailpipe, oil in the antifreeze and a loss of cylinder pressure are other symptoms. Unexplained engine overheating is another problem. If unresolved, gasket damage may lead to costly repairs due to excessive damage.
